History of Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go is a picturesque village located in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture,
renowned for its traditional Gassho-style houses.
These unique architectural structures were designed to withstand the region's harsh winter climate
and are a testament to the ingenuity of the local culture,
which thrives in harmony with the rich natural environment.
In 1995, Shirakawa-go was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site,
attracting numerous visitors from around the world to experience its timeless beauty and cultural heritage.
Gassho-style Houses
The Gassho-style houses feature steeply pitched roofs,
designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region.
Named after the gesture of "praying hands" due to their resemblance,
these houses are characterized by thatched roofs
and are meticulously maintained
through an annual community effort known as "Yui,"
where local residents come together to preserve their traditional homes.
This architectural style represents a
remarkable blend of wisdom and ingenuity,
supporting the traditional rural way of life.
